Miracles: Seeing the Light in a Dark Place

Lisa Cohn, Founder of Living Water for Women, spent a culmination of 15 years of ministry inside Nassau County Jail, during that time she worked with hundreds of incarcerated women helping them find their voice by providing a writing workshop.  She knew these voices needed to be heard and compiled their stories into a book, Miracles: Seeing Light in a Dark Place

The women there wrote everything in the book, she only offered commentary. They are all amazing and definitely worth redeeming! She can no longer hold a writing workshop there but their voices will be heard forever! This collection of writings from incarcerated women will open your eyes and hearts. The Scripture and journaling space will hopefully inspire you all.

Are you willing to embark on a new type of journey?

“If in our daily life we can smile, if we can be peaceful and happy, not only we, but everyone will profit from it. This is the most basic kind of peace work.”
― Thich Nhat Hanh, Being Peace

This book was meant to inspire, to stimulate, to motivate, to arouse and to stir all of you women out there to believe differently than you may have in the past. So many of us are broken in some way and yet we list to think of ourselves as whole, complete, and enough.

As you read the stories, poems and anecdotes contained here, perhaps you can view these broken, incarcerated women as being not so different than yourselves. They may have just had some bad luck or circumstances thrown their way.

Many have made bad choices but unless we can see them differently, how can we ever help them recover and become whole again?

Ample space has been provided for you to journal and feel your feelings so that perhaps you will recognize a change and be filled with compassion as I have been transformed by these very stories myself.

Writings of Woman while in Jail are Heart Wrenching

Love this book!!! I am going slowly through this book because each poem, each story of the women as they give their stories of struggle and fight for redemption makes me cry. The writings portray the hearts of these woman as they have gone through jail time. Lisa’s efforts to help the women, as they leave jail and they try to get their lives together so that they can became productive members of society, is herculean. This book is so real and touching and I would recommend it to anyone who has a heart. Everyone should know what these women experience who are sentenced to jail time.
